White animals have always had a special place in history. For Germans it is holy white horses, while in Siam it was the white elephants and in Africa age old paintings of white lions have been discovered.

White lions are very rare. Yet their white fur doesn’t come from albinism, but from a simple accident of nature. In this case the accident is not a very happy one, because their colour means they find hunting difficult.

This means the survival of white lions really depends on humans, and there are 37 white lions in human care now. These all derive from an original litter of three white lions that were saved and brought into human care.
