There’s something primeval about him – and indeed, rhinos belong to one of the oldest species on earth. But nowadays they are an endangered species. Tsavo is probably most famous rhino in the world. He is a bull white Rhino (Cerathotherium Simum) and was born in 1976. His wild relations are still mostly in southern Africa, where the females live together in small groups while the bulls live as single rogues, unless it is the mating season. With no natural predators, other than man, rhinos are generally peaceful and rather gentle animals. Tsavo owes his fame his 30 years of performing in the circus. He was first on tour with Barums, before he joined Circus Krone where’s trained, cared for and showed by Martin Lacey Jnr. In contrast to Martin’s lions Tsavo is a vegetarian. He eats hay, special feeed pellets, and he’s really keen on a few carrots or apples. In Circus Krone he lives comfortably in his own custom-made wagon that he’s had for several years. He also has a big, bright heated tent where he can sleep on straw, as well as an outdoor enclosure. Tsavo loves nothing more than to wallow in the mud and a bit of a cuddle. The mud baths he gets in summer in his enclosure, the cuddling is Martin Lacey’s job, but one he enjoys because he’s very fond on his “big boy” Tsavo.
