Lions don’t really do vegetarianism. They want meat. The more, the better. An adult lion can easily eat around 30 kg of meat in a single meal. But the Lacey lions don't ever get this much in one feed because they are free from the risks of hunting for food and perhaps having to endure three or four days of fasting before they make a successful kill. Instead they get fed six days a week with modest, controlled portions of between 6 and 12 kg. One day a the week is always reserved for fastening – even lions must think of their figures.
But despite their dislike of vegetables and carbohydrates, lions like a bit of variety in their menu. Hence the Lacey brother's refrigerator wagons always look like well-stocked butcher’s shops. Next to sides of beefs, dozen offrozen chicken wait. Special containers are loaded with entire ox livers, hearts and of course, the lions’ favourites, tripe. In the preparing areas - as clean as any professional kitchen - sacks of special mineral and vitamin powders and bottles with cod liver oil are stored, all important for vitality and especially the bones of the lions. The shopping list is always written out in tons.
Feeding time is either very early in the morning or in the evening after the last show. And for feeding the lions are separated, each to their own part of the wagon, so every one can consume his or her own special meal in peace.
