There are probably two factors which are responsible for tigers being loners in their natural habitat: first of all, hunting in a group wouldn’t make much sense in the jungle; and second, the available resources in the jungle are too restricted. However, as all cats tigers are incredibly adaptable, adult tigers are able to interact socially with their mates. They learn it as babies – tigresses usually have two or even three cubs, which stay with them for around two years– so as young animals they’re used to living with a sister or a brother. If the food supply in their area is good enough, tigers actually like to live in company.

Although tigers, like all cats, need a lot of rest, they are more active than lions, probably due to their natural habitat, which requires covering more distance while hunting than lions. Next to sleeping, observing is their favourite past time; therefore, for the species-appropriate husbandry of tigers , the size of the enclosure isn’t as important as the “entertainment” provided. One factor in entertainment is variety – and that’s something the Lacey tigers never lack. They needn't look at the same walls and the same surroundings all year, but have new things to look at every week. The floors of the enclosures change, the surroundings are different in each new city, the decorations change every time, and there are other smells, other sights and other people to watch.
